Partnership Agreements [Global Fund News Flash: Issue 42] — (English)
The Global Fund and WHO signed a cooperation agreement on 20 May to formalize and spell out how both organizations will support countries to develop more strategic investments as they put together grant applications. This technical agreement is one of several that the Global Fund is developing with key partners, where an ongoing working relationship may benefit from a formal agreement. The Global Fund signed an agreement in April with UNICEF to better align investments in commodities aimed at improving the health of mothers, newborns and children. Another partnership agreement, with UNAIDS, is in the works. Partnership is at the core of the Global Fund, with a commitment to work together, share responsibility, and be mutually accountable. The new funding model that is being fully implemented this year is deepening the spirit and the reality of partnership, with an explicit goal to increase the impact of health interventions and to reach more people...

Structures of PI4KIIIβ complexes show simultaneous recruitment of Rab11 and its effectors [Science 30 May 2014: Vol. 344 no. 6187 pp. 1035-1038 DOI:10.1126/science.1253397] — (English)
Our data provide a mechanism for how PI4KIIIβ coordinates Rab11 and its effectors on PI4P-enriched membranes and also provide strategies for the design of specific inhibitors that could potentially target plasmodial PI4KIIIβ to combat malaria...

A viral over-expression system for the major malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae [Scientific Reports 4, Article number: 5127 doi:10.1038/srep05127] — (English)
We developed and characterized an efficient Anopheles gambiae densovirus (AgDNV) over-expression system for the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae...

Neuroauditory Toxicity of Artemisinin Combination Therapies—Have Safety Concerns Been Addressed? [Am J Trop Med Hyg 2014 13-0702] — (English)
We review neuroauditory safety data on ACTs to treat uncomplicated falciparum malaria...

An Evaluation of Methods for Assessing the Quality of Case Management for Inpatients with Malaria in Benin [Am J Trop Med Hyg 2014 13-0389] — (English)
To improve healthcare quality for hospitalized patients with malaria in Benin, a feasible and valid evaluation method is needed...

Controlled Human Malaria Infection [J Infect Dis. (2014) 209 (suppl 2): S40-S45. doi: 10.1093/infdis/jiu063] — (English)
The lessons learned from over 25 years of experience in consistent, careful preparation and execution of the CHMI model at WRAIR can provide a foundation from which the dengue field can begin to develop a rigorous and safe “CHDI” model...

Decreased Endothelial Nitric Oxide Bioavailability, Impaired Microvascular Function, and Increased Tissue Oxygen Consumption in Children with Falciparum Malaria [J Infect Dis. (2014) doi: 10.1093/infdis/jiu308] — (English)
Children with malaria have decreased endothelial and microvascular function, and increased oxygen consumption, likely contributing to pathogenesis...

Can antibodies against flies alter malaria transmission in birds by changing vector behavior? [Journal of Theoretical Biology] — (English)
In this paper, we study one such pathogen-vector-host system, avian malaria in pigeons transmitted by fly ectoparasites, where both two-way and three-way interactions play a key role in shaping disease spread...

Inward cholesterol gradient of the membrane system in P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes involves a dilution effect from parasite-produced lipids [Biol Open. 2014 May 29. pii: BIO20147732. doi: 10.1242/bio.20147732] — (English)
Here we report on the relative cholesterol contents of these membranes in parasitized normal (HbAA) and hemoglobin S-containing (HbAS, HbAS) erythrocytes...

Cytotoxic Markers Associate with Protection against Malaria in Human Volunteers Immunized with Plasmodium falciparum Sporozoites [J Infect Dis. (2014) doi: 10.1093/infdis/jiu293] — (English)
These data underline the efficiency of CPS immunization to induce sterile protection, and support a possible role for cytotoxic CD4 and CD8 T cell responses in pre-erythrocytic immunity...
