UNDP/RBM video calls for support to end one of the deadliest diseases on earth...

Rolling Back Malaria in member states of The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation [RBM] — (English)
128 million malaria cases and 453,000 deaths in OIC countries in 2010...

RBM Annual Report 2013 [RBM] — (English)
We have come a long way since malaria was first placed on the global agenda, but the job is far from finished. The push to roll back malaria needs to continue, so that a maximum number of malaria-endemic countries reach the MDGs. Beyond 2015, it needs to stay on the bold path, charted in the Global Malaria Action Plan, to near zero global malaria deaths and disease elimination...

UNITAID and the Global Fund Announce Formal Collaboration [UNITAID and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria press release] — (English)
UNITAID and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria have signed a collaboration agreement around a market-shaping agenda to maximize the value for money from each organization's investments...

Researchers call for new evaluation methods to assess malaria programmes [Imperial College London] — (English)
Researchers have developed a new way to evaluate malaria elimination programmes to enable valuable initiatives to continue to receive support...

Senior Computational Statistician: Spatial Model [Malaria Atlas Project] — (English)
The Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford is looking for an experienced statistical modeller with skills in conceiving, implementing, and testing bespoke spatial statistical models on a 2-year fixed-term contract...

Measuring the path toward malaria elimination [Science] — (English)
In many parts of the world, malaria elimination—defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the absence of locally acquired malaria cases in the country—is being considered as a target because of recent successes in reducing disease burden...

A barcode of organellar genome polymorphisms identifies the geographic origin of Plasmodium falciparum strains [Nature Communications 5, Article number: 4052 doi:10.1038/ncomms5052] — (English)
A simple genetic marker that quickly and accurately identifies the geographic origin of infections would be a valuable public health tool for locating the source of imported outbreaks. Here we analyse the mitochondrion and apicoplast genomes of 711 Plasmodium falciparum isolates from 14 countries, and find evidence that they are non-recombining and co-inherited. The high degree of linkage produces a panel of relatively few single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that is geographically informative. We design a 23-SNP barcode that is highly predictive (~92%) and easily adapted to aid case management in the field and survey parasite migration worldwide...

A synthetic sex ratio distortion system for the control of the human malaria mosquito [Nature Communications 5, Article number: 3977 doi:10.1038/ncomms4977] — (English)
Here we generate a synthetic sex distortion system by exploiting the specificity of the homing endonuclease I-PpoI, which is able to selectively cleave ribosomal gene sequences of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae that are located exclusively on the mosquito’s X chromosome...

Intracerebral bleed, right haemiparesis and seizures: an atypical presentation of vivax malaria [BMJ Case Reports 2014; doi:10.1136/bcr-2014-204833] — (English)
We report a rare case of a 47-year-old healthy man from a malaria-endemic region, presenting with intracerebral bleed, right haemiparesis, aphasia and seizures following vivax malaria. This was successfully managed conservatively, without any neurosurgical intervention, with combination therapy of intravenous artesunate, oral hydroxychloquine and primaquine...

Retinopathy, histidine-rich protein-2 and perfusion pressure in cerebral malaria [Brain, 10.1093/brain/awu144] — (English)
Comment on MacCormick et al. (2014)...

Amino Azabenzimidazoles, a Novel Class of Orally Active Antimalarial agents [J. Med. Chem., DOI: 10.1021/jm500535j] — (English)
This series demonstrates no cross-resistance against a panel of Pf strains with mutations to known antimalarial drugs, thereby suggesting a novel mechanism of action for this chemical class...

KAF156 is an antimalarial clinical candidate with potential for use in prophylaxis, treatment and prevention of disease transmission [AAC.02727-13] — (English)
Collectively our data suggest that KAF156, currently under evaluation in clinical trials, has the potential to treat, prevent and block the transmission of malaria...

G6PD status and risk of haemolysis in African P. falciparum infected children receiving single-dose primaquine [AAC.02889-14] — (English)
G6PD enzyme function and genotype was determined in Ugandan children with uncomplicated falciparum malaria enrolled in a primaquine trial after exclusion of severe G6PD deficiency by fluorescent spot test...

Fatty acid synthesis and pyruvate metabolism pathways remain active in dihydroartemisinin induced dormant ring stages of Plasmodium falciparum [AAC.02647-14] — (English)
Our results demonstrate most metabolic pathways are down regulated in DHA induced dormant parasites...

Primaquine Enantiomers: Scalable Preparation and Differential Pharmacologic and Toxicologic Profiles [AAC.02674-13] — (English)
These studies suggest that (-)-(R)-PQ may have a better safety margin than the racemate in human...

Treatment of murine cerebral malaria by artemisone in combination with conventional anti-malarial drugs: anti-plasmodial effects and immune responses [AAC.01553-13] — (English)
The research here demonstrates the effects of novel combinations of the new artemisinin derivative, artemisone, a recently described 10-alkylamino artemisinin derivative with improved anti-malarial activity and reduced neurotoxicity. We here investigate its ability to kill P. falciparum in a high throughput in vitro assay and to protect mice against lethal cerebral malaria caused by P. berghei ANKA when used alone or in combination with established anti-malarial drugs...
