Country and Community Consultation Toolkit for GMAP2 now available [RBM] — (English)
The process of country consultations for the 2nd Global Malaria Action Plan is moving ahead and consultations have now been held in Myanmar, Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and the Philippines. The in-country process starts off by talking with affected communities, community development workers, first line health workers, district and regional staff. The views of these key stakeholders are put at the centre of national level consultations that involve a broad multisectoral audience including civil society, the private sector, academia, donors and Government representatives from different sectors and levels.
Access the toolkit of materials for arranging a consultation and participate in the process of creating the GMAP2 document. The toolkit is available in French, Spanish and Portuguese as well as in English...

Global, regional, and national incidence and mortality for HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria during 1990—2013: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 [The Lancet, doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(14)60844-8] — (English)
Our estimates of the number of people living with HIV are 18·7% smaller than UNAIDS's estimates in 2012. The number of people living with malaria is larger than estimated by WHO. The number of people living with HIV, tuberculosis, or malaria have all decreased since 2000. At the global level, upward trends for malaria and HIV deaths have been reversed and declines in tuberculosis deaths have accelerated. 101 countries (74 of which are developing) still have increasing HIV incidence. Substantial progress since the Millennium Declaration is an encouraging sign of the effect of global action...

Host iron status and iron supplementation mediate susceptibility to erythrocytic stage Plasmodium falciparum [Nature Communications 5, Article number: 4446 doi:10.1038/ncomms5446] — (English)
Here, using an in vitro parasite culture system with erythrocytes from iron-deficient and replete human donors, we demonstrate that Plasmodium falciparum infects iron-deficient erythrocytes less efficiently. In addition, owing to merozoite preference for young erythrocytes, iron supplementation of iron-deficient individuals reverses the protective effects of iron deficiency...

A sugar phosphatase regulates the methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway in malaria parasites [Nature Communications 5, Article number: 4467 doi:10.1038/ncomms5467] — (English)
ecause PfHAD1 has homologues in plants and bacteria, other HAD proteins may be MEP pathway regulators...

PGMS: A Case Study of Collecting PDA-Based Geo-Tagged Malaria-Related Survey Data [Am J Trop Med Hyg 2014 13-0652] — (English)
This case study seeks to design a generic survey framework PDA-based geo-tagged malaria-related data collection tool (PGMS) that can be used not only for large-scale community-level geo-tagged electronic malaria-related surveys, but also for a wide variety of electronic data collections of other infectious diseases...

Polymorphisms in Plasmodium falciparum Chloroquine Resistance Transporter and Multidrug Resistance 1 Genes: Parasite Risk Factors that Affect Treatment Outcomes for P. falciparum Malaria after Artemether-Lumefantrine and Artesunate-Amodiaquine [Am J Trop Med Hyg 2014 14-0031] — (English)
Monitoring selection and responding to emerging signs of drug resistance are critical tools for preserving efficacy of artemisinin combination therapies; determination of the prevalence of at least pfcrt K76T and pfmdr1 N86Y should now be routine...

Effect of co-administered fat on the tolerability, safety and pharmacokinetic properties of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine in Papua New Guinean children with uncomplicated malaria [AAC.03314-14] — (English)

Sex-partitioning of the Plasmodium falciparum stage V gametocyte proteome provides insight into falciparum-specific cell biology [mcp.M114.040956] — (English)
To better our understanding of gametocyte development and subsequent infectiousness to mosquitoes, we undertook a Systematic Subtractive Bioinformatic analysis (filtering) approach to identify sex-specific P. falciparum NF54 protein markers based on a comparison with the Dd2 strain, which is defective in producing males, and with syntenic male and female proteins from the reanalyzed and updated P. berghei (related rodent malaria parasite) gametocyte proteomes...
