Roll Back Malaria report heralds record success and anticipates near-zero malaria deaths in next decade if efforts sustained

A report released on 12 September revealed that global malaria deaths have dropped by an estimated 38%, with 43 countries (11 of them in Africa) cutting malaria cases or deaths by 50% or more, reversing the trend of the previous decade and saving over a million lives.

On the eve of the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Dr Asha-Rose Migiro and Prof Awa Marie Coll-Seck, Executive Director of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership hosted an event gathering Heads of State, First Ladies, Ministers of Health and Foreign Affairs , leading agencies and a multitude of RBM partners to reflect on the remarkable progress made in malaria control over the last 10 years.

An article published in The Lancet suggests that interventions targeting malaria, such as insecticide-treated bed nets, antimalarial drugs and mosquito control, could substantially reduce cases of bacteraemia, which kill hundreds of thousands of children each year in Africa and worldwide.
