The focus of this year's Africa Malaria Day is the need for all partners to work together to reverse the progression of malaria and make a significant impact in endemic countries: Leadership and Partnership for Results.

UK Malaria financing report, 15 March


The UK All Party Parliamentary Malaria Group (APPMG) report on financing was launched in London 15 March by the UK Secretary of State for International Development Hilary Benn. The Report calls on governments throughout the world and the international community to ensure that increased funding is predictable and sustainable, including supporting innovative ways of raising the necessary funding on a long-term and large-scale basis, and to ensure that there is effective deployment of resources.

Consensus Statement on the use of wash resistant insecticide treatment kits as an interim strategy

The RBM Working Group for Scalable Vector Control (WIN) and WHO Global Malaria Programme have developed a consensus statement regarding the use of wash resistant insecticide treatment kits. It discusses an interim strategy for retreatment of conventional nets during the transition period to full replacement with long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs).

Princess of Africa Foundation launched


Yvonne Chaka Chaka, UNICEF Regional Spokesperson and RBM Goodwill Ambassador, launched the Princess of Africa Foundation 15 March. The Foundation seeks to improve accountability and transparency in the use of funds dedicated to fighting malaria in Africa.

Targeted support for Global Fund Round 7: Workshops 26-29 March in Nairobi; 2-5 April in Douala

Roll Back Malaria Partners launched a campaign to improve the quality of Global Fund malaria proposals from sub-Saharan African countries starting with two regional workshops in March. In 2006, just over one-quarter of all malaria control proposals submitted to the Global Fund from sub-Saharan African countries were approved for financing. The recently formed RBM Harmonization Working Group, consisting of representatives from UN agencies, donors, civil society, foundations and African countries, is leading the campaign to support over 20 applicant countries with the proposal process prior to the July 4, 2007 submission deadline.

RBM malaria endemic country constituency consultation


3 April, Cameroun - 9 Ministers of Health from the 11 countries of the Economic Community of Central African States met in Douala for joint strategizing on malaria control. The Honourable Minister of Health of Cameroun was re-elected as a member of the RBM Board, representing the subregion for a further 2 year term.

Corporate Response to Malaria, 12 March, Washington DC

A private sector forum designed to promote key achievements and present practical methods for increased corporate involvement in an effective and innovative malaria response was held 12 March in Washington DC, presented by the Global Business Coalition and the Brookings Institution.

Experts Discuss Malaria Research Strengthening in Africa, 26-30 March, Brazzaville

Experts, researchers and malaria control programme managers met under the auspices of the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM), the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) and the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa. The meeting brought together researchers, implementers, as well as WHO and its partners to exchange information on MIM-supported malaria research, discuss critical needs in capacity for malaria research, and identify mechanisms for strengthening MIM's role in supporting research capacity in Africa.

RBM malaria endemic country constituency consultation

11 April, Johannesburg - Ministers of Health from the 7 countries of the IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development - an East African regional development organization) are invited to this RBM consultation around the African Union Ministers of Health Conference. The Ministers will discuss RBM Board issues, including election of a Board Member from the region.

12 April, Johannesburg - Ministers of Health from the 15 member states of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) are invited to an RBM consultation around the African Union Ministers of Health Conference. The Ministers will discuss RBM Board issues, including election of a Board member from the region.
